Get Thrashed - The Story of Thrash Metal

Get Thrashed - The Story of Thrash Metal (2006)(DVDRip)

The GET THRASHED journey begins in the early 80s, where Metallica and several other bands laid the groundworkfor what would becomea lasting impression on the face of heavy metal music. These bands helped ignite local scenesin Los Angeles, the Bay area of California and New York City, which helped fuel a worldwide thrash metal movement.By the dawn of the 1990’s, thrash bands had gone from playing backyard barbeque parties to headlining arenas and Metallica were on their way to becoming one of the biggest metal acts of all time. But as legions of headbanging, stage diving and moshing metalheads were flocking to see their favorite bands, the tides had begun to change.

In the early 1990’s, a changing musical landscape sent thrash spiraling back into the underground. Some of themusicians passed away, some returned to their day jobs and some bands broke up. While the music lived on,the scene was forever changed.

Get Thrashed traces the rise, fall and impact of thrash metal; from its early years, through its influence ongrunge, nu metal and today’s heavy metal scene. It is the story of the heaviest, hardest music of the 80s and early 90s as told by the bands who lived it, the fans and bands that grew up on it and by the artists that carrythe “thrash metal” flag today. The documentary throws new light on an overlooked, yet incredible music scene and how it went from a simple rumbling in the underground to a loud, obnoxious and constant roar in the (almost) mainstream.

Cathedral

Cathedral Discography

Cathedral Discography :

Origin Coventry, England
Genres Doom metal, Stoner metal

The band was founded in 1989 by Lee Dorrian (former singer of grindcore pioneers Napalm Death), Mark 'Griff' Griffiths (a Carcass roadie) and Garry 'Gaz' Jennings (formerly of thrash metal upstarts Acid Reign). At first they played very heavy and slow doom metal that was first released through Rise Above Records, vocalist Lee Dorrian's indie label, before signing to Earache. They later incorporated elements of progressive rock into their sound when the band signed to Columbia Records in the USA in 1992 (while still under contract with Earache U.K.).[citation needed] They were later dropped by Columbia Records in 1994. The band continued with Earache Records until 2000. Then signed to Dream Catcher Records for one lp and a tour. In 2004 Cathedral signed to their current label Nuclear Blast.
In 1989 Lee Dorrian left his former band Napalm Death mainly because he was getting sick of the punk scene and did not like the death metal direction Napalm Death was heading towards. Cathedral was formed after Lee Dorrian and Mark Griffiths met and discussed their love for doom bands like Candlemass, Dream Death, Pentagram, Trouble, and Witchfinder General.
The only original band members in the current line-up are Lee Dorrian and Garry 'Gaz' Jennings on guitars, although Jennings did once leave the band in their early history, only to rejoin shortly afterwards.
After no news from the band since they toured for The Garden of Unearthly Delights, they played their first show in two years at Damnation Festival 2008, in Leeds. They played a new song and have confirmed dates for 2009 including Hellfest.
On October 28th 2009, MetalUnderground.com revealed that the band were planning to enter the studio the next month to record a new album entitled, "The Guessing Game", which is set to be released around March/April 2010. Some of the song titles confirmed include, "Open Mind Surgery" and "Death Of An Anarchist."

Vanishing Point

Vanishing Point Discography

Vanishing Point Discography :

Origin Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Genres Power metal, Progressive metal

The band formed in the early 1990s with the line-up of guitarist Tommy Vucur, drummer Jack Lukic and bassist Joe Del Mastro, from an earlier band called Eye. Vocalist Silvio Massaro, keyboards player Pep Sammartino Joined the band in the mid 90s, They changed the band name to Vanishing point. guitarist Chris Porcianko joined in the late 90s. Concentrating their efforts on songwriting and recording, the group's first album In Thought was recorded in 1996 and released in Europe by German label Angular Records in 1997. The following year it was issued in Australia by Melbourne label Metal Warriors.

In 1999, the band supported Yngwie Malmsteen and American band Nevermore before Sammartino amicably left the band to pursue other avenues. He was replaced by Danny Olding. Soon afterward, Vanishing Point headed to Germany for the 2000 Wacken Open Air festival. Later that year the band's second album Tangled in Dream was released in Australia by Metal Warriors and internationally by Germany's LMP label. The following eighteen months was a busy period for the group. In late 2001, Vanishing Point returned to Europe for a tour with Gamma Ray and Sonata Arctica, during which Olding provided live keyboards for Gamma Ray. Returning to Australia, they toured the country with German band Edguy. Olding resigned from Vanishing Point at this time.

Vanishing Point worked on their next album throughout 2003 before making a rare live appearance at the annual Metal for the Brain festival in Canberra. Leonard Kopilas from Manic Opera joined the band in place of Olding as recording continued, but Vanishing Point was forced into an involuntary hiatus due to ongoing problems with Metal Warriors. However, in 2005 the band returned to live performance at Metal for the Brain in February and then a show with Nightwish on the Melbourne leg of their Australian tour. Embrace the Silence was released mid-year internationally by Germany's Dockyard 1 and in Australian by the Wollongong-based Riot! label. Late in the year, Joe Del Mastro announced his departure from Vanishing Point. After completing a final round of live shows with the band, he was replaced by Steve Cox from Melbourne hard rock band Teargas.

During 2006, Vanishing Point supported Black Label Society and Gamma Ray on the Melbourne legs of their Australian tours. On 7 December Jack Lukic announced his departure due to family commitments and 22 days later Cox also left. He was replaced by Adrian Alimic, also of Manic Opera and Christian Nativo took the place of Lukic. In May 2007, Vanishing Point supported DragonForce in Australia and New Zealand. The band's fourth album The Fourth Season was released on 24 August 2007 through Dockyard 1. In February 2008 Vanishing point supported Iron Maiden, performing a single show in Perth and two shows in Melbourne. Vanishing Point appeared alongside fellow Australian power metal band Black Majesty on tour with Helloween in February 2008.

Kix

Kix Discography

Kix Discography :

Also known as 4⁄5 Kix, The Shooze, The Generators, The Baltimore Cocks
Origin Hagerstown, Maryland, USA
Genres Glam metal, Hard rock, Heavy Metal

Kix was started by Ronnie "10/10" Younkins and Donnie Purnell in Dec. of 1977 in Hagerstown, Maryland. The first song Ronnie and Donnie played together was Atomic Bombs. They played with two musicians from Pittsburgh, "Tee" and "Tunes." The first practices were at the Old Mill Inn, in Williamsport, MD, just outside of Hagerstown. Because "Tee" and "Tunes" lived so far away the rehearsals didn't work out. They started rehearsing with Brian "Damage" Forsythe, whom Ronnie asked to join the new band. Soon after they invited Donnie Spence to join as a drummer. He didn't have a car so he was picked up every day for rehearsals.

Steve Whiteman was added to the band after a couple of other lead singers (Terry Brady and Sam Smith) didn't work out. Steve also played drums, so he and Donnie Spence, who was also a good singer, would alternate drums and lead vocals. Steve though, sang all the difficult songs. The guys met Steve at a show at The Other Place in Ridgely, WV. They had heard about him, and went to see him play with his old band. During the break they took him out to the car and played him a cassette of their original songs. They asked him to join. A week later Steve moved to Hagerstown, to join what was then called "The Shooze."

After a while, Donnie Spence didn't work out anymore. Jimmy "Chocolate" Chalfant was recruited as the drummer for "The Shooze." Jimmy was Donnie Purnells old bandmate and had played with him in his previous bands "Fire and Rain", "Starship" and "Jax". Ronnie used to go see Donnie and Jimmy playin those bands. From the beginning Ronnie had envisioned this as the perfect line-up: Donnie (who also wrote cool songs), Jimmy and Brian, all musicians he knew and admired from around town. So by late 1979 the classic Kix lineup of Steve Whiteman (lead vocals), Ronnie "10/10" Younkins (guitars), Brian "Damage" Forsythe (guitars), Donnie Purnell (bass, keyboards, backing vocals), and Jimmy "Chocolate" Chalfant (drums, backing vocals) was complete.

They changed their name to "The Generators," when they realized there was another band out of Chicago, named "The Shooze." They began recording their first album on Atlantic in 1980 before eventually settling on "Kix."

Tankard

Tankard Discography

Tankard Discography :

Origin Frankfurt am Main, Germany
Genres Thrash metal

Tankard were formed in 1982 by three classmates, Andreas Geremia, Axel Katzmann and Frank Thorwarth. At the time, the band was known as Vortex and Avenger until the current name of Tankard was discovered by the band in a dictionary. Their first song written was called "Ray Death", a song about nuclear war and their first gig was played in a local classroom in 1983. As the band were not permitted to drink alcohol in the school, they smuggled their beer in with milk cartons. Soon after, band member Bernhard Rapprich left the band as his conservative father did not want him "hanging around with a bunch of drunks" and was replaced by Andy Bulgaropoulos..

In 1984, Tankard signed to Noise Records after narrowly missing out on signing with Steamhammer during a gig where guitarist Andy Bulgaropulous made the mistake of wearing a blue sweatshirt with a deer on the front creating the wrong image and causing Steamhammer to retract their offer of a contract..

Over the years Tankard have built a steady fanbase and have released a series of albums cementing their niche fame. Krisiun

Krisiun Discography

Krisiun Discography :

Origin Ijuí, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
Genres Death metal

Krisiun was formed in 1990, by three brothers, vocalist/bassist Alex Camargo, guitarist Moyses Kolesne and drummer Max Kolesne. (Alex uses his mother's maiden name). They have toured extensively through North America, South America and Europe (recording their first official DVD while in Poland).
The band is heavily influenced by the debut albums of Sodom, Kreator, Morbid Angel and Slayer. Their violent lyrics and very fast musical tempo makes them one of the most eminent "extreme death metal" bands in the world today.
They released two demos before moving to São Paulo in 1995. People there had already started to notice the budding talent of the band. Shortly after the move, their second guitarist Altemir Souza left the band and returned to Porto Alegre (where he died in a motorbike accident in 2002).
The Unmerciful Order EP (their only "major" recording featuring a second guitarist, namely Mauricio Nogueira of Torture Squad) established the band as a cult act, and that status was further confirmed by the release of their debut album Black Force Domain (now as a trio) in 1995. The following albums continued to improve their brutal and uncompromising approach to death metal.
In February-March 2007, the band toured North America with Unleashed, Belphegor and Hatesphere. The band spent May and June 2007 on the road through Europe alongside Immolation and Grave. Early September 2007 saw them hitting the road again touring Northern Europe. And the last two weeks of September were spent in Russia on the Flaming Arts Festival tour. October 2007 saw Krisiun touring Poland and the Balkans extensively with Vader, Incantation and Rotting Christ.
In April-May 2008, the band recorded their latest in Stage One Studios in the city of Borgentreich, Germany. It was produced by Andy Classen who had worked with the Brazilians on the album Conquerors of Armageddon and AssassiNation.
The new album was given the name Southern Storm and the launch in Europe was July 21, 2008 via Century Media Records. The disc brought 12 new tracks and a version of "Refuse/Resist", the Sepultura classic from the Chaos A.D. album.
In 2009 they will tour Europe with Nile.

Kansas

Kansas Discography

Kansas Discography :

Origin Topeka, Kansas, USA
Genres Rock, progressive rock

Dave Hope (bass), Phil Ehart (drums, percussion), and Kerry Livgren (guitars, keyboards, synthesizers) formed a progressive rock group named Kansas in 1970 in their hometown of Topeka, Kansas, along with vocalist Lynn Meredith from Manhattan, Kansas, keyboardist Don Montre, keyboardist Dan Wright, and saxophonist Larry Baker.
A year earlier, Meredith, Montre, Wright and Livgren were performing in a band called The Reasons Why. After changing the band's name to Saratoga, they started playing Livgren's original material with Scott Kessler playing bass and Zeke Lowe on drums. In 1970, they changed the band's name again to Kansas and merged with members of a rival Topeka progressive outfit White Clover. This early Kansas group, which lasted until 1971 when Ehart and Hope and some of the others left to reform White Clover, is sometimes referred to as Kansas I.
Ehart was replaced by Zeke Lowe and later Brad Schulz, Hope was replaced by Rod Mikinski on bass, and Baker was replaced by John Bolton on saxophone and flute. (This lineup is sometimes referred to as Kansas II, and 30 years later would re-form under the name Proto-Kaw.) In 1972, after Ehart returned from England (where he'd gone to look for other musicians), he and Hope once again reformed White Clover with Robby Steinhardt (vocals, violin, viola, cello), Steve Walsh (vocals, keyboards, synthesizers, percussion) and Rich Williams (guitars). In 1973 they recruited Livgren from the second Kansas group, which then folded. Eventually, they received a record deal with Don Kirshner's eponymous label, and decided to adopt the Kansas name. In early 1974 they recorded their first album.
